The Science

What is red light therapy?

Red light therapy (also called photobiomodulation, low-level light therapy, or LLLT) uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to influence cellular function. The active wavelengths sit roughly between 630-660 nanometers (red, surface-acting) and 810-850 nanometers (near-infrared, deeper-penetrating). At these wavelengths, light energy is absorbed by mitochondria (the cell's energy producers) and stimulates the production of ATP, the molecule cells use to power virtually every function.
The downstream effects are wide-ranging: collagen production increases, inflammation markers decrease, and tissue repair accelerates. Research has explored applications in skin aging, wound healing, post-workout recovery, joint pain, hair regrowth, and seasonal mood. The treatment is non-invasive, non-thermal, and produces no UV radiation, there is no risk of sun damage.
At Rêve, we use medical-grade panels with named wavelengths and verified irradiance, the same class of equipment used in clinical research. Not consumer panels, not multi-purpose tanning-salon adaptations.
Applications

What red light therapy may support

Red light therapy is well-studied for the following applications. Results vary by individual, condition, dose, and consistency.

Skin & Collagen

Fine lines, skin texture, post-procedure recovery, mild rosacea. The most studied cosmetic application, typically 4-8 weeks for visible change.

Pain & Inflammation

Joint pain, muscle soreness, tendonitis, post-injury inflammation. Many guests notice relief within the same session.

Athletic Recovery

Post-workout muscle recovery and reduced delayed-onset soreness. Often used by athletes the day after intense training.

Hair Regrowth

Androgenetic alopecia (genetic thinning) in both men and women. Results typically appear after 3-4 months of consistent use.

Sleep & Mood

Early-evening red light exposure may support sleep onset and seasonal mood, particularly helpful during Michigan winters.

Post-Procedure Healing

Excellent companion treatment after laser work, microneedling, or chemical peels. Accelerates healing and calms inflammation.

Your Session

What to expect

You'll be shown to your private suite. Depending on the area being treated, you may remain dressed or undress to the level you're comfortable with, the light penetrates clothing but works more effectively on bare skin. You'll wear protective eyewear (red light is non-damaging but bright). Then you'll stand or sit in front of the panel for 10-15 minutes.
The light is warm but not hot. There is no sensation other than a gentle warmth on the skin. Most guests close their eyes and rest. When the timer ends, that's it, you can return to your day immediately.
Frequency matters more than length. For most concerns, 3-4 sessions per week for the first 4-6 weeks produces noticeable change. After that, 1-2 sessions per week maintain results.

The flip side is that results fade when the schedule does. Red light works by accumulating small effects, so a course abandoned halfway leaves most of the benefit unclaimed, and picking it up months later means paying those front-loaded weeks over again. If your goal needs something stronger than light, we'll say so at the consultation instead of selling you a package. Guests keep the routine with us from Troy, Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Rochester Hills and across Metro Detroit.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

For some applications, yes, and the research is strongest for skin (collagen and wound healing), inflammation, and tissue recovery. For other applications (mood, sleep), the evidence is more mixed. The treatment is well-tolerated and very low risk, which is why it's grown so popular.

Inflammation and recovery: often immediate. Skin texture and tone: 4-8 weeks of consistent sessions. Hair regrowth: 3-4 months. Sleep and mood: within the first week or two if it's going to work for you.

A combination is usually best. Red light at 630-660nm acts on surface skin. Near-infrared at 810-850nm penetrates deeper into muscle, joint, and tissue. Our panels deliver both.

For most goals, 3-4 sessions per week for the first 4-6 weeks, then 1-2 per week for maintenance. Recovery use (post-workout, post-procedure) is as-needed.

Yes, extremely. There is no UV radiation, no thermal damage, and no risk of skin cancer. We screen for photosensitizing medications during your first visit.

Yes, collagen stimulation is one of the most studied benefits. Expect change in fine lines and skin texture after 6-8 weeks of consistent sessions. Pairs especially well with microneedling.

For androgenetic alopecia (genetic thinning), yes, moderate evidence supports red light therapy. Plan for 3-4 months of consistent use to assess effect.

Different mechanisms. Red light works via photobiomodulation. Infrared sauna works via thermal heating. Both have benefits, neither replaces the other.

Yes, daily use is safe. Most guests find 3-4 sessions a week is the sweet spot of effect vs scheduling.

Putting it off carries a cost that never shows up on a receipt: the photo you stepped out of, the afternoon you sat out, the version of you your family gets at the end of a depleted week.
