The Treatment

What is microneedling?

Microneedling, also called collagen induction therapy, uses a precision device with fine sterile needles to create thousands of microscopic channels in the skin. These channels are too small to see and heal within hours, but the body's response to them is the entire point: skin perceives the micro-injuries as something to repair, and floods the area with collagen, elastin, and growth factors. The result is firmer, smoother, more youthful-looking skin over the following weeks and months.
The procedure has been studied since the 1990s and has become one of the most reliable in-office treatments for skin texture, acne scars, fine lines, and enlarged pores. It's safe for nearly all skin types, including Fitzpatrick IV, V, and VI, where many laser treatments are not appropriate. And because it doesn't use heat or light, it can be done year-round without sun-exposure concerns.

Collagen is also the reason not to wait. Your skin produces about one percent less of it every year from your mid twenties on, and microneedling works by triggering production you still have. The collagen you build in your thirties and forties is collagen you keep. Old acne scars respond too, but a scar that's been remodeling for a decade needs more sessions than one treated in its first years. If your skin isn't a fit for needling, we'll say so and recommend what is. Guests come to us for it from Troy, Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Rochester Hills and across Metro Detroit.
At Rêve, microneedling is performed by licensed clinicians using medical-grade automated devices with adjustable needle depth. Not the cosmetic dermarollers sold for home use.
What It Treats

What microneedling can address

Acne Scars

One of the most-studied applications. Boxcar, rolling, and ice-pick scars all respond, usually requiring 3-6 sessions for significant improvement.

Fine Lines & Wrinkles

Around the eyes, mouth, and forehead. Best for fine lines; deeper static lines may benefit more from filler or RF microneedling.

Enlarged Pores

Visible pore size on the nose, cheeks, and chin. Collagen builds around the pore, reducing its appearance.

Skin Texture & Tone

General roughness, uneven skin texture, dullness. Microneedling reveals smoother, more luminous skin within 2-3 treatments.

Stretch Marks

Especially newer stretch marks. Older silver-white stretch marks improve more gradually.

Hyperpigmentation

Including melasma, where laser treatments may not be safe. Microneedling can improve pigmentation without the risk of laser-induced flare.

PRP & PRF

The PRP add-on, also known as the "vampire facial"

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) and the newer PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) are concentrated growth factors derived from a small sample of your own blood. After your blood is drawn and processed in a centrifuge, the resulting golden serum is applied topically during microneedling, the micro-channels created by the needles allow the growth factors to penetrate deeply and accelerate healing.
The "vampire facial" nickname comes from this combination. The clinical reality is less dramatic than the name: an autologous (from your own body) serum that supports healing and amplifies collagen response. Many guests find adding PRP/PRF cuts their visible downtime in half and improves overall results, particularly for acne scarring.
PRP and PRF are not for everyone, and the modest extra cost isn't always justified. We'll be honest about whether your goals make it worth adding.
The Visit

Your microneedling appointment

01

Skin assessment

Your clinician reviews your skin, discusses goals, and identifies the right depth and number of sessions. If we're adding PRP, your blood is drawn and processed at this stage.

02

Topical numbing

A medical-grade topical anesthetic is applied for 30-45 minutes to ensure comfort throughout the treatment.

03

Treatment

The microneedling device passes over your skin in sections, with depth adjusted by area. The face takes 20-30 minutes. PRP serum is applied during or after the passes. Most guests describe sensation as a vibration with mild prickling, not painful.

04

Calm-down phase

Skin is moderately pink to red afterward, similar to a mild sunburn. We apply a soothing serum and discuss aftercare. No makeup for 24 hours, no active skincare for 48 hours.

05

Recovery

Redness typically resolves within 1-3 days. Some guests notice mild flaking around day 3-5 as the skin renews. Results begin appearing at the 2-week mark and continue building for 8-12 weeks.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Yes, for the right indications. Strong evidence supports microneedling for acne scars, fine lines, and skin texture. Results require multiple sessions (typically 3-6) and become visible 4-8 weeks after the first treatment.

For texture and tone: 3 sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart. For acne scars: 4-6 sessions. For fine lines: 3-4 sessions. Maintenance treatments every 6-12 months keep results.

With topical numbing applied 30-45 minutes before treatment, most guests describe sensation as a vibration with mild prickling rather than pain. The forehead and around the nose can feel more intense than other areas.

Most guests have moderate pink-to-red flush for 24-48 hours, then mild for another day or two. Some experience mild flaking around day 3-5. Makeup can be applied after 24 hours. Adding PRP shortens visible redness.

Different tools for different concerns. Traditional microneedling is excellent for surface texture, fine lines, and acne scars. RF microneedling adds radiofrequency energy for deeper collagen remodeling and skin tightening, better for sagging skin and deeper scars. We offer both.

Yes, one of microneedling's biggest advantages. Because it doesn't use heat or light, it's safe for all Fitzpatrick skin types (I-VI). Many laser treatments aren't safe for darker skin; microneedling is.

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is concentrated growth factors from your own blood, applied during microneedling. The micro-channels allow the PRP to penetrate deeply, accelerating healing and improving collagen response. The "vampire facial" is the marketing nickname for this combination.

No makeup for the first 24 hours. After that, gentle mineral makeup is fine. Avoid actives (retinol, glycolic acid, vitamin C) for 48-72 hours.

The new collagen you build is yours, it doesn't disappear after treatment. However, aging continues, so most guests do maintenance sessions every 6-12 months.
