The Treatment

What is a chemical peel?

A chemical peel uses a controlled application of acid solutions (glycolic, salicylic, lactic, mandelic, or TCA) to exfoliate the outer layers of the skin and trigger renewal underneath. The skin you're left with is fresher, smoother, brighter, and more evenly toned. Peels are among the oldest, most studied, and most reliable tools in dermatology, and the modern formulations make them remarkably customizable.
At Rêve, we offer light peels (lunchtime peels with minimal downtime), medium-depth peels (visible peeling for 3-7 days with stronger results), and layered protocols for melasma and stubborn pigmentation. We do not perform deep phenol peels, those are surgical procedures best done in an operating room.
The right peel for you depends on your skin type, your concern, your tolerance for downtime, and what you're treating. We always start gentle and build, never the other way around.

Pigment is the clearest case for starting now. Sun damage and melasma sit in the surface layers at first, where a light peel series clears them. Left through another summer or two, pigment migrates deeper into the dermis, where peels reach it slowly or not at all. The same spot that fades in three visits this year can become a project next year. If a peel isn't the right tool for your pigment, we'll tell you before you spend a dollar on one. Guests bring us their sun damage from Troy, Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Rochester Hills and across Metro Detroit.

Your Visit

What to expect

01

Skin assessment

Your clinician reviews your skin history, current routine, recent sun exposure, and any active conditions. We discuss your goals and recommend the right peel, sometimes that's a different one than you came in asking for.

02

Skin prep

Your skin is thoroughly cleansed and degreased so the peel solution applies evenly. For medium-depth peels, you may have used a prep regimen at home for 1-2 weeks beforehand.

03

The peel application

The solution is brushed onto your skin in layers. You'll feel a tingling, warming, or stinging sensation that fades within minutes. We monitor your skin's response throughout.

04

Neutralization & finish

The peel is neutralized at the right point, never left too long. We apply soothing serum, broad-spectrum sunscreen, and review aftercare in detail.

05

Recovery & results

Light peels: glow within 1-2 days, no visible peeling. Medium peels: redness and peeling 3-7 days, then renewed skin. Avoid sun and use protection religiously during recovery.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Yes, peels are among the most evidence-based treatments in dermatology. The right peel for the right skin produces visible results. Multiple sessions usually outperform a single dramatic peel.

Light peels (glycolic, lactic): none to 24 hours of mild flush. Salicylic: 1-3 days mild flaking. VI and TCA: 5-7 days of visible peeling. We tell you exactly what to expect and plan timing accordingly.

Some are, some require extra care. Lactic, mandelic, and certain VI Peel protocols work well for Fitzpatrick IV-VI. We avoid certain TCA depths on darker skin without prep. Your clinician chooses the right peel for your skin type.

Yes, peels are one of the most effective melasma treatments, particularly in series with the right post-care. Melasma requires patience: 4-6 peels plus consistent sun protection and at-home regimen are usually required.

Light peels: same day. Medium peels: typically 48-72 hours, or after initial flaking subsides. Mineral makeup is gentler during recovery.

Yes, schedule it 7-10 days before for a light peel, 2-3 weeks before for medium. Never a peel right before an event; always allow recovery time.

Peels exfoliate and brighten, best for tone, pigmentation, and surface texture. Microneedling builds collagen, best for scars, fine lines, and pore size. They can be combined in alternating sessions for skin-quality goals.

A single peel improves skin for 4-6 weeks. A series builds compounding results that last several months. Maintenance peels every 4-8 weeks keep skin at its best.
